If you’ve been a fan of electronic music over the past few years, then there’s a good chance you’ve had the opportunity to catch ZHU live, either at city stop or on the festival circuit. Although the obscure, enigmatic artist has recently just announced a full North American tour following the release of his latest acclaimed album, Ringo’s Desert Pt. 1, ZHU is already finding a way to switch things up. During a surprise appearance at the Do LaB stage at Coachella this year, ZHU threw down a “Blacklizt” set. The differences between a standard ZHU set and a Blacklizt set haven’t been made explicitly clear, but based on what we’ve heard and seen so far, it sounds like Blacklizt is ZHU’s techno persona.

Throughout the entire set, we can hear different unidentifiable techno remixes of classic ZHU tracks like “Working For It,” “Automatic,” “Intoxicate,” “In The Morning,” and plenty more. The music sounds like unmistakable ZHU, but in a way we’ve never heard before, and quite frankly, we’re loving every bit of it. During the second half of the Blacklizt set, ZHU transitions into tracks that we’re more familiar with, ultimately concluding some heavier sounds like his collab with Ekali.

This is the first actual full listen of ZHU’s Blacklizt project that we’ve been able to get our hands on, and we can only hope for more. There’s only one official scheduled “Blacklizt” date in the future, and it’ll be during Splash House in Palm Springs, California, which takes place June 8-10.

In the meantime, do yourself a favor and listen to the even darker side of ZHU, with this full stream of his surprise Blacklizt set at Coachella. Enjoy!
